America’s first five-cent coins came from the Gap Nickel Mine in Lancaster County PA. From 1866 to 1893 these coins were minted in Philadelphia PA due to the abundance of rich nickel ore “Millerite” which Joseph Wharton mined in Bart Township. Christopher Haefner, founder of the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club will explore the history and geology of this important part of our local heritage.
