From basketball to ballet, there’s so much for kids to do at Hempfield recCenter! Plus, we’re always adding new programs, so check back often to see what’s happening.

*NEW* Evening Playground Watch - ages 5–12

Need to run evening errands without the kids? If so, drop your children off at the A. Herr Dream Park and we’ll watch them for you with our trained playground staff supervising! Children will be required to wear a bracelet that identifies them as a participant and no child will be permitted to leave the playground area without being signed out by their guardian. No watch 7/4.

YM  Charlie Parker, a Millersville University All American and Hall of Fame inductee and a former professional basketball player brings to Hempfield recCenter the all-new CrunchTime Hoops basketball camp! Players will practice skill development ranging from fundamentals to pro-level scoring moves. Players will be pushed in drills including ball handling, footwork, scoring, passing, defense, and shooting techniques. Games and competitions provide a fun, competitive atmosphere all week long! Counselors include current and former collegiate players and coaches. Intermediate to advanced players.

Gym Rats Basketball Clinic - ages 6–12

YM A fun introduction to the game of basketball. Participants will receive excellent instruction in a fun and positive manner. We will work on basic fundamentals and play skill development games while learning more about the game of basketball. Coed.

CrunchTime Hoops Training Clinic - ages 6–12

Hoopers Basketball - grades 1–4

YM Players are introduced to the game of basketball through practice drills and organized scrimmages. The focus is on learning and experiencing the game in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. Players will be grouped into teams and assigned a parent volunteer/coach. Concentration is placed on practicing ball handling, dribbling, passing, and shooting. The first four weeks of the program will be one-hour team practices. The remaining four weeks will be scheduled scrimmages against the other teams in the program. A time clock will run, but no scoring will be kept. A detailed schedule will be given out at the coaches’ meeting and distributed to all participants and their parents. Coed.

Shaolin Wushu Kung Fu - ages 7+

YM  Learn authentic Washu for fitness, self-defense and exhibition. In this class, students will learn fundamental long-fist forms which increase strength, flexibility and mental discipline. Upon mastering the “five stances form”, students advance to Yellow Sash and gain access to Wushu competitions.

May Thai Kickboxing - ages 17+

The national sport of Thailand. Muay Thai is an excellent way to get in top-shape and learn practical self-defense. Students will learn the “boxing drills” of punching and kicking using targets and bags in addition to the little known “infinite form” which is the basis of the fighting style.

Be prepared to sweat and bring a water bottle. Athletic-wear and sneakers are adequate. Personal gear such as gloves and wraps can be purchased from the instructor at a nominal fee—not needed to begin.

Youth Ballet - ages 7+

YM  Learn this classical dance form characterized by grace, the precision of movement, flexibility, and ballet technique.

Rhythmic Gymnastics - ages 5-12

YM Instructors: Ken Brennan and Coach Ashley Ogle

An Olympic sport which combines graceful movement with athletic displays of strength. It involves tumbling, ballet and the manipulation of apparatus including ball, hoop, ribbon, clubs, and rope. Classes are ongoing. Returning students will advance to Junior Olympics Level 3 curriculum.

Students should wear gymnastics (sport) leotards with no leggings or shoes. Rhythmic gymnastics shoes are recommended but not required for beginners. Instead, clean low ankle socks may be brought to class for the dance portions but should not be worn at the start of class.

Youth Flag Football - ages 6–12

Print the Coed Flag Football Registration Form

Learn the fundamentals of the sport in a non-competitive league. Players are assigned to teams based on their age and size. Opportunity is given to experience all positions on the field. Each team practices/scrimmages for 1-1/2 hours per week.

Hempfield recCenter Ski & Snowboard Club - grades 7–12

Youth in grades 7–12 are invited to join the Ski and Snowboard Club. New and returning skiers and boarders are encouraged to join! Trips are chaperoned by adults.

A mandatory preseason meeting for both parents and youth will be held:

The clinic will consist of stick work, offensive and defensive drills, strength and conditioning, and information to grow your knowledge of the sport. All levels welcome. Trainer: Corey Nehlig. Fee: $100/ person

RPM Junior Tennis Camp - ages 12–18

Two, one-week long camps are designed to help juniors improve their all-around tennis game. At the conclusion of each camp, we will hold a USTA junior tournament for juniors in the surrounding area. Campers that are USTA members will receive free entry into that Tournament.

National Junior Tennis & Learning - ages 6–15

Four-week tennis program provides instruction and play for players of all levels. NJTL is a USTA (United States Tennis Association) sponsored program.

40th Year Anniversary!

An ongoing tradition since 1978! Hempfield recCenter’s longest-running program fills your child’s summer vacation with supervised activities at your neighborhood playground. The eight-week program gets kids outdoors, engaged and active! Each week is a different preplanned theme that includes organized games and sports plus optional pool parties and field trips!

Monday–Friday 9:00 am–3:30 pm for eight weeks.

Four sites:  A Herr Park • Mountville Park • Silver Spring Park • East Pete Park

We had a record number of playgrounders this year—see you next year!

Hempfield recCenter Summer Day Camp

Campers are divided into age groups with planned activities including arts & crafts, indoor and outdoor sports, games and themed events. Optional activities (additional fees) include swimming, sports camps, field trips and more! Financial assistance is available.
