Day 1 Recap:
Day 1 of the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge wrapped up after 16 first-round qualifying singles matches. Americans did well today with five U.S. players reaching the second round of qualifying.
Highlights from the day included No. 1 seeded qualifier Anastasia Tikhonova defeating Martina Okalova (SVK) in a tightly-contested three-set match, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Robin Anderson (USA), a former tournament champion, defeated fellow veteran Christina Rosca (USA), 6-7 (4), 6-1, 3-1 (ret).
Tournament wildcard Ava Catanzarite (USA), a Pittsburgh native, gave it her all but lost in straight sets to Katrina Scott (USA), 6-3, 6-1. Rising Penn State junior and second-time wildcard player, Olivia Dorner (USA), lost a battle against Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty (IND), 6-3, 6-4.
Hannah Chang (USA), a former tournament doubles champion, and Iryna Shymanovich both swept their opponents in quick straight set matches this afternoon.

More qualifying matches will continue Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. In singles, eight matches remain to be played for spots in the main draw, which begins tomorrow (8/6). On the doubles side, nearly half of the draw is composed of American players, and the main draw matches will kick off in the afternoon.
