Day 3 Recap:
Wednesday at the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge was the first day of main draw singles matches, with 16 players advancing to the second round. There was one doubles match in the evening using Hempfield recCenter’s new stadium court lights. The day also included a Yonex Racquet Drawing as well as High School Night for local players.
Three-time singles winner Madison Brengle had a powerful second-set comeback, defeating Veronika Miroshnichenko 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. American wildcard Mary Stoiana upset fifth seed Simona Waltert in straight sets, and Mai Hontama upset second seed Rebecca Peterson 6-1, 6-2.
This year’s main draw wildcard Sophie Chang had an eventful match against Madison Sieg. After winning the first set, Chang came back from a 5-0 deficit and brought the second set to a tiebreak, but it wasn’t enough to win her the match.
