Day 6 Recap
Saturday at the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge saw the end of the doubles draw, and the singles finalists for Sunday decided. There was also a USTA junior players demonstration.
Fourth seed Madison Brengle fought her way to the final, now with a chance to win the Koser a fourth time. She defeated eighth seed Sujeong Jang in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
In the other semifinal, Makenna Jones’ outstanding tournament finally came to an end. It was a back-and-forth match. Jones was down 0-5 in the first set before winning five straight games to draw even before eventually losing the set 7-5. Her opponent, Xinyu Wang, had match points up 5-4 in the second set before Jones clawed her way back again, going on to win the second set in a tiebreak.
Wang took back control of the match in the third, ending the wildcard’s hopes with a dominant final set. The final score was 7-5, 6-7, 6-0.
Because of a withdrawal by yesterday’s doubles semifinal winners, today’s doubles semifinal would decide the champions for this year’s Koser Tennis Challenge. Sophie Chang, last year’s doubles champion, along with her partner, Yuliia Starodubtseva, defeated Maria Kozyreva and Veronika Miroshnichenko, 6-3, 6-3, to become this year’s Koser Doubles Champions.
