In 2026, the Hempfield recCenter Summer Playground Program proudly celebrated an incredible milestone—50 years of providing fun, safe, and enriching summer experiences for the children of our community.
For half of a century, generations of local children have spent their summers making friends, exploring the outdoors, playing games, creating crafts, discovering nature, and making memories that last a lifetime. What began as a simple neighborhood playground program has grown into one of Hempfield recCenter’s most cherished traditions, serving thousands of children and families throughout the Hempfield area.
At its heart, the Summer Playground Program has always been about more than keeping kids busy during the summer months. It has been a place where children build confidence, learn teamwork, develop independence, and create meaningful friendships in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Every day offers new opportunities for exploration, creativity, physical activity, and personal growth. Our dedicated team works hard to provide a summer filled with exciting games, sports, arts and crafts, nature activities, special events, field trips, guest presenters, and countless opportunities for outdoor play. From laughter on the playground to adventures in our parks, every activity is designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, spark curiosity, and help children connect with one another and the natural world around them.
As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2026, we also celebrate the families, team members, volunteers, and community partners who have helped make this program such a lasting success. Many parents who once attended Summer Playground as children now send their own sons and daughters, creating a wonderful tradition that spans generations.
